‘I sit, I wait, I see.’
Sphinx is a sculptural chair caught between furniture, creature, and ruin; between knowledge and violence, beauty and monstrosity. Her body is reduced to a shadow wooden structure, while the mythical fragments of lion, bird, and snake, both ferocious and precious, are pushing through, as extremities of other bodies growing out of her remnants.
The emphasis on the chair’s feet refers to Oedipus, whose name means “swollen foot”, giving the feet a sense of weight.
Eyes see from a place you cannot see, hidden from the first view. They belong first to the creature, to its knowledge and at the same time they foreshadow the resolution of the myth: when Oedipus encounters the truth, he destroys his own eyes.
As told by myth, The answer to the Sphinx’s riddle is the human. Here, the human completes the riddle by sitting on the Sphinx, bringing together the familiar and the other, the body and the creature.
