What remains of a conversation when the treated subject is erased from it?
Words are all of a sudden erased, leaving us contemplating the meaning of a sentence through its construction and the tone of the protagonists. The images are modified accordingly, cut, reverted, expended in time.
You find yourself recreating meaning out of absurdity, taking your own path in a deprogrammed, destroyed, detour situation.
[subtitles:]
The situation has become too common to be noticed,
And, the problem, in these kind of situations,
When the problem has just become our normality,
is that we don’t notice it anymore.
How would you make it noticeable then?
By transforming the images,
so normality becomes a question,
and alternatives become an option.
Twicking normality is the best way to realize
That we were expecting a norm, somewhere, and this norm should not be.

Accepting the norm is accepting to be part of a system,
without realizing the part of responsability we can take in it,
without realizing, the amount of freedom
this would grant us.By transforming the words,
So the way we used to categories objects,
becomes a question again.
By regaining free will,
through either plain disobedience
or through a daily and thorough
exercise of randomness.
It is an exercise of the absurd,
A way to eperiment normality,
as simply one possibility among so many others,
in order to open better possible scenarios.

Pavillon Laprade

Creating a space from debate, from curated to spontaneous interculturality
November 2021Project made under the supervision of AMO

The Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris is a private park situated in the South of Paris hosting over 6 000 people from all around the world every year. These people are students, researchers, artists. It was created in 1919 as a tool to avoid a Second World War, by making the young intellectual elites from different countries come to one international place to study together, exchange about their cultures and grow together during their studies. It is now composed of around 40 houses, most of them representing a different country.Throughout the years, the CIUP became a shelter to people running away from the difficult political shifts of their own countries, but also the starting point of important student activism movements. These last few years, the duration of the stay of the inhabitants of the campus has shortened, and their conversation space became virtual, limiting the community aspect of the life there.
This project aims to recreate a physical space for this conversation, were conversation can occur freely, out of the frame of curated political events.

The location chosen for that purpose is the Pavillion Laprade, built in the CIUP in the 1950s as a student restaurant. It slowly decayed, until it became completely obsolete in the early 1970s and was abandoned.I imagined the pavillon Laprade as a place enriching the student life by the spontaneous exchanges it could produce, considering students as the leaders of today’s and tomorrows main political events. I focused on the two dynamics of group debates: separating and gathering around ideas, to imagine a method of organization of space in which people could improvise around their own ideas
.

How much do garments say about the society we live in, the social, economic and political background we belong to, our behaviours and what we aspire to? How much does the representation of a certain social cliché say on this same society? What can we take out of the confrontation on the same plan of two very different social clichés?

What would come out of the confontation of the imagery building the stereotypical figure of a 16th century British king and of a 20th century femme fatale? Through the making of moodboards, image associations, sketches, material samples, patterns, and shapes, this project explores the notions of sexuality, power, and clothing, as a way to question gender-based power dynamics in society and open new possible narratives for the future. You can find the full book here.

As a continuation of the project “Unravelling the city”, developped within the frame of the collaboration between the Textiel museum and Design Academy Eindhoven, the project “Gleaning the city” explores, both through theorical and embodied research, the potentialities of the transformation of a trivial material through craft.

Through that process, the practice of collecting objects and materials in the city becomes a new form of gleaning and appropriating this city, exploring, ultimately, the tension between the functional aspect of copper and
its preciosity when used for aesthetic reasons, focusing on its ubiquity in urban
environments.
To see copper as the precious veins of the city also implies engaging with the
different social narratives around it, from precarious sections of the population
who survive by harvesting it in an urban environment, to its historical use in
precious and tedious copper works that blur the line between common objects
and artefacts.

Eventually, it questions our right to the city, what makes the city possible; who modifies it and how to modify it; how do we evolve in it and make it evolve in both a symbolic and material way.

“To go on construction sites, in abandoned buildings, around abandoned buildings, destroyed buildings, was something I was quite well used to, usually to collect images, to film, to document what was about to not be there anymore. I realized we could integrate this daily exercise into a wider practice. When looking at it, there was not much difference between us, living in the city, collecting what, around us, had been abandoned, in order to find a new use for it, and what, in another timeframe, in another context, was called gleaning. “

Hecathoncheires chair

Steel, copper
January 2023

In Greek mythology, the Hecatoncheires are the sons of Uranus and Gaia. These extremely strong giants, bearers of fifty heads and a hundred arms, are commonly known as the builders of the palace of Zeus, and the keepers of a prison of hell. They could be seen as the caretakers of the warmest and the coldest architectures one could be responsible for.

This chair combines scrap steel pieces with copper pipes. The organic shape of the first material contrasts with the industrial rigidity of the latter, the cold and stable color shades of the steel balance the wide range of warm copper colors. The industrial becomes warm, the organic becomes cold.

A multitude of legs answer the multitude of small scrap pieces, giving its name to the chair, the Hecatoncheires chair.

My Big, Fat,
Greek Kitsch Fantasy

Publication and series of furniture pieces,
Installation
July 2024
Graduation project exhibited at the Graduation show,
Dutch Design Week 2024

“Greek cultural heritage is complex, often shaped by fantasised representations of classical antiquity and other signifiers associated with the country’s history and geography. Whether these are accurate depictions of Greek culture or not, such clichés have been adopted by the diaspora in many parts of the world in order to recreate a sense of identity when settling abroad. In a dialogue between visual research and production, Phèdre Barbas translated many of these symbols – from classical architecture to the fake stucco walls that might be found inside a Greek restaurant – into a series of furniture pieces that act as a pastiche of different archetypes, each questioning the semiotic language used in the construction of a national identity.”
Colin Keyes.
The publication is structured around five intertwined axes differentiated by their format and type of paper, following a non-linear narration.

«The Greek Kitsch Essay, the creation of a myth» retranscribes the way the national narrative of the newborn Greek state of the 19th century is following a continuity with the Classical Greek civilization, under the impulsion of the Greek diaspora and of an European cultural elite wishing to break centuries of Byzantine and Ottoman tradition. In the very same perspective, some elements of the Antique Greek culture, once extracted and re-contextualized, integrate contemporary culture, creating a phenomenon of commodification of Greek culture.

«The boat» traces, through photography, my itineraries in Greece, during my research. They are representative of my relationship to Greece, and, at the end, of the relationship one coming from a diasporic community has. It is a relationship of movement, a relationship of in-between.

«A world tour in fantasized Greece, the architecture of restaurants as non Greek-Greek stereotypical architecture» presents a collection of images of restaurants in Greece around the world, showing the homogenization of a Greek identity that has its main relevance outside of Greece, where it becomes necessary to signify that something is Greek ; therefore, the paradox of authenticity.

The Big Atlas of Kitsch is a collection of kitsch images following the theme of Greece, collected on internet or by my own means.

«The process» retranscribes the way I translated and materialized this research, in order to create my very own, physical fantasy of Greece.

You can find the chapters « The Greek Kitsch Essay, the creation of a myth » and “The Big Atlas of Kitsch” here.

Printed booklet: 20.5 x 28.7 cm, 46 pages

Unravelling tuxedo pants, both figuratively and litteraly, comes to questioning, ultimately, their social status, in relation to the way they are produced, the materials composing them and the way they are produced.
The contrast between the different narratives possible around this (not so) simple object creates a monster, which, once seen and accepted as such, can become the starting point of new, more responsible and sensible social productions.
The outcomes of this project was an animation and a visual research book. You can find some selected excerpts of the book on this page, and the full work on isuu by following this link.
